Development is a complex phenomenon that is not only related to economic growth but also encompasses social transformation, cultural change, and the political dynamics that occur within a society. In practice, development is often understood narrowly as an increase in economic indicators
such as gross domestic product (GDP), investment, or industrialization. However, an overly economistic approach tends to ignore the social dimension, which plays a crucial role in determining the success or failure of a development process. Therefore, an analytical perspective is needed that
can explain development as a comprehensive social process, involving interactions between social structures, actors, institutions, and the values that develop within society.
Development sociology emerged as a branch of science that specifically examines the relationship between development and social change. This discipline seeks to understand how development processes influence social structures, create patterns of inequality, and encourage or even hinder societal transformation toward a more advanced state. Within this framework, development is no longer viewed as a universal, linear process, but rather as a contextual phenomenon, influenced by the historical, cultural, and political conditions of each society. Thus, development sociology makes an important contribution by critiquing the basic assumptions of development and offering alternative, more inclusive and equitable approaches.
